So I went to go see "Into great silence," a three hour German-made film about a monastery in France. Not a whole lot going on.
Still, it was a nice film, I thought. Unless you have somebody chewing popcorn behind you...
But that isn't my point here. The film-maker used super-8 for parts of it and I couldn't stand it! Don't get me wrong, I love super-8. But what happened was the transfer: as far as I could tell, the super-8 was digitally scanned and printed to 35mm. Ugh. You could actually see the little scan pixels, attempting to replicate the graininess of the super-8 blown up so far. I didn't even think it was super-8 until the end of the film when I saw the credits. I thought it was just crappy low-res video.
The last time I saw a super-8 film blown up to 35 was, I think...Jim Jarmusch's film about Neil Young & Crazy Horse. I can't remember what it was called. I don't remember having the same reaction. I wonder if he re-photographed the super-8 on some kind of optical printer?
Anyway, just thought I'd rant. Super-8 and computers aren't good friends in my book.

Re: Anybody seen "Into great silence" ?
Fri, June 15, 2007 - 5:13 PMi definitely preferring editing and viewing super 8 in it's original state. i transfer my stuff to digital to edit though because i don't have enough time. the one i did edit by hand was done when i was on unemployment...
i think the optical printer would be the way to go to blow up super 8...
