The best processing I have seen is at Spectra. They do super 8, 16mm, and 35mm E-6 (ektachrome), ECN-2 (color neg) and more on site. Very good people to deal with:

I would avoid Pro8mm at all costs. They buy inferior product cheap, re-label or repaint it, and sell high. This includes film, cameras, - everything. Not a good place to do business.

I've just ordered some film and mailers from pro8mm. Their prices for film and processing seemed comperable to Spectral's. I bought the stock Kodak films not the pro8mm stuff so we'll see. I guess you've had some bad experiences with them Paul?? Do tell.

Actually, film and processing from Spectra should average about $5.00 per roll cheaper with neg! In addition, Spectra's other services such as telecine, etc are cheaper and better as well. Wrap it all up with better customer care and Spectra wins hands down.

To answer your question, film, processing and telecine at Pro8 has just not been very good. My last film ended up with Xray flashes on it when I shot everything locally (a result of their inferior recans being sent in from places unknown). It ruined my entire project. Not to mention the lab dirt and scratches making my footage look as though it were processed someplace in South America. Their attitude was really very unprofessional when I confronted them. It seemed to them that I was at fault for all the problems! So, I let them keep every cent of my money and vowed never to use them again.

To be fair, not all things I have done at Pro8 have had so many problems. And, I still would have continued to use them with their high price, questionable quality and poor customer service (I’m too lazy to look elsewhere I guess). It was their lack of ethics on my last project that was the final straw.

In any case, take care in your dealings with Pro8mm. I urge to consider the other alternatives on your next shoot.

        Good Luck!

Egads Paul, so sorry to hear about your travails with Pro8mm. I'm shooting some reversal stuff just for fun and to test my camera. I'll do a "poor mans transfer" with a miniDV camera and edit with that. I'm on no schedule so it'll probably be a while. Thanks again for the heads up.

i just got some film back from cala foods. yep, any cala foods will still process kodachrome film and it's only $3.99 a roll! that's about $10 cheaper than any other place. I've only looked at it through a viewer, not a projector but it looks ok. does anyone know, is the quality usually worse than if you took it to gasser's or action photo to get it processed? why the hell is it so cheap???

if you do take it there, put "develop movie film" on the outside of the mailer. (they have a drop box for film...)

hey, thanks for the info on Pro8mm. I live in LA and was lead to believe they were the last bastion for super-8, but will DEFINITELY check out spectra now!!!

Over the years I've sent 16mm and 8mm to Yale Labs, not Yale Film & Video.

    <www.yalefilmandvideo.com/>
    10555 Victory Blvd.
    North Hollywood, CA 91606
    (818) 508-YALE
    (800) 955-YALE
    FAX (818) 762-0688
    Info@YaleFilmandVideo.com

They are processing the new 64T although the web sight hasn't been updated to reflect it.

You might also check the forums at <www.filmshooting.com/> to see who has had good/bad experience at the various labs.

I've used Yale many times back in the day...though I can't remember who it was that got written up for "censoring" content (i.e. they wouldn't touch some artsy gay sex film or something), it seems like it might have been Yale. They did a decent job with my processing at the time.

Yeah, I remember hearing about that. I was helping a friend shoot a student film in San Diego, and it required us to do a nude scene. Imagine our surprise when they told us that they no longer wanted our business!

So, yes, Yale did censor--and they may still do it, for all I know.

We ended up having to reshoot the scene (I think they kept the final footage) and process it somewhere else--which was not easy because it was the early 90's, and very few places actually processed B&W Super-8.

Go to www.yalefilmandvideo.com and click on "Terms and Conditions." it's spelled out in black and white--okay, bad pun.

fortunately, there are way more options for B&W S8 now than there were back then, so they won't be getting my cash for processing.

I send my film to Exclusive Film & Video in Toronto and never had any problems - they do all the reversal stocks but no negs. Apparently Niagra Film Labs does negs but I haven't sent them anything yet. There are a surprising number of super 8 labs out there so shop around. I've never worked with Pro8mm but I've hearn nothing but bad things about them.
